Why this happens depends on the circumstances, of course; how the artist reacts determines what happens next. Over the past decade, they’ve returned to a more experimental mindset. It is a melancholy gospel number that documents an argument Bono wishes he had with his friend, INXS’s Michael Hutchence. Wiser heads recognized this. The only true clunker to be found is a calypso version of Johnny Cash’s “Don’t Take Your Guns To Town,” an experiment that just doesn’t work. And this is an all-killer, no-filler recording on which tracks such as "Wild Honey" and "Kite" are just as memorable as the singles.

Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of (4:32) 3. Yet they didn’t fully abandon the tools they picked up over the decade.

For those who saw it, The Elevation Tour felt like a band returning to form.

Beautiful Day (4:07) 2.

“Elevation” proves that Pop wasn’t a totally bad idea; the dance groove is restrained and works well when the excesses are paired down. 35 Views.

14 hours ago All That You Can’t Leave Behind stands as a solid, consistent album; the only real flaw comes from its sequencing. U2 released four very fine singles from it . In addition to the aforementioned remaster, the first disc features "The Ground Beneath Her Feet," a number with lyrics by novelist Salmon Rushdie that appeared as a bonus track on the original album in several countries outside the U.S. A second CD holds nine odds and ends, including an acoustic version of "Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of"; "Stateless," from the soundtrack of the film The Million Dollar Hotel; four remastered B-sides; and three excellent session outtakes: "Levitate," "Love You Like Mad," and "Flower Child. Reunited with the production team of Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno, who produced all of the aforementioned early triumphs, the band offer an 11-song set that finds Bono singing passionately, with the Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr. respectively adding shimmering lead guitar, rhythmic bass lines, and an insistent beat. The setlist reflects it, too; it features seven songs from the new album, plus a healthy selection of the band’s greatest hits. Yet all four songs are sequenced at the beginning of the album, making the album feel quite top-heavy. U2, Ireland’s own Fab Four, ignited a blaze in the mid-1980s with The Unforgettable Fire, then turned up the heat later in that decade with The Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby. With restrained production, the songs are shorter and succinct; All That You Can’t Leave Behind is the band’s shortest album since The Unforgettable Fire.

It’s nice to hear them return to the roots-rock/gospel hybrid of Rattle & Hum again on “Grace” and “Peace On Earth,” but it’s to their credit that these numbers don’t sound like a band imitating itself. That's not a bad description but it fails to note one key point: This music, which evolved into rocksteady and reggae, is among the happiest you'll ever hear. Now they’ve been released on a two-disc collection that adds 47 more Pottinger-produced recordings, most of which have been unavailable since the 1960s. Versions of “Bullet The Blue Sky,” “Desire,” and “I Will Follow” retain the white-hot intensity of the original versions while simultaneously flexing their muscles in a most appealing way. Considering the harder-edged Achtung Baby’s world-conquering success, and the surprise success of the edgier, experimental companion Zooropa, the band fell down the trap of self-indulgence. Things cooled off a bit in the 1990s, which witnessed the release of the uneven Zooropa and Pop, plus a retrospective collection. 'White Riot' is about events that took place 40 years ago but its message of unite in a fight against the right is still important today. “Beautiful Day” sounds like the U2 of yore, and it set the tone for the rest of the album. Overproduced, overwrought, and largely forgettable, Pop felt like the end of an era, a band that had traded its passion for production, an expensive-sounding record that ultimately felt hollow—and, for the first time in their career—utterly superficial. And if that’s the only quibble, then that’s a pretty good thing, no? He has always loved language and has issued spoken-word recordings before, such as the excellent “On Elvis Presley’s Birthday,” which first appeared on 1993’s Unreal City.
